Start with the delivery route
A presentation box and a shipping box do different jobs. If the product travels through a parcel network, allow for transport protection. A decorative rigid box may need an outer shipping carton.
Think about the opening
Rigid boxes give a substantial presentation and can accommodate shaped inserts. Mailers offer a folding structure that can be practical for direct-to-consumer packing. Neither is automatically the better option: fit, design and testing matter.
Compare the complete cost
Ask about the box, insert, assembly, storage and shipping volume together. A low unit box price does not describe the complete cost of getting the product to the customer.
Test with the actual product
Use the packed product to check fit and movement. Define relevant handling and transit tests with the supplier before committing to a production specification.
